‘The story of my eel’ Artist’s Book

The Story of my Eel

An artist’s book with linocuts and text

As a child I was given a copy of Hans Christian Anderson’s Fairy Tales. The exquisite illustrations, black and white wood engravings by Rex Whistler, gave me a visual language and were profoundly to influence my choice of subject and medium.

My memories appear brightly lit, sharply focused and enclosed by deep darkness.

I grew up in a country village surrounded by the flood meadows of the river Severn, so darkness for me was very real and very dark, this and the plight of the eel population was the inspiration for my book The Story of my Eel.
